Power & Control Wheel

Power and Control wheel

The Power and Control Wheel is a powerful tool that helps us understand the dynamics of abusive relationships. It sheds light on the various tactics and behaviors that an abusive individual might employ to gain power and control over their victim. Developed by the Domestic Abuse Intervention Programs, this wheel serves as a visual representation of the systematic nature of abuse.

The wheel is divided into different categories, each representing a different aspect of abusive behavior. These categories include physical violence, intimidation, coercion and threats, emotional abuse, isolation, minimizing, denying, and blaming, using children, economic abuse, and male privilege. Each category represents a specific tactic used by the abuser to maintain control over their victim.

By using the Power and Control Wheel, we can better understand the tactics employed by abusers and the impact they have on their victims. This knowledge is crucial in raising awareness, educating ourselves, and empowering individuals to recognize and address abusive behaviors.
